Joba's Velocity Returns With Excellent Start In Detroit
Joba Chamberlain?s fastballs reached 96 miles an hour against the Tigers, and he pitched comfortably at 92 to 94 while allowing one run and three hits, with three walks and six strikeouts over seven innings.
Until Wednesday's start, there had been a growing sentiment that Chamberlain would be better suited for late-inning relief work.
Chamberlain is now 4-1 with a 2.85 earned run average as a starter, with more strikeouts than innings pitched.
?He?s got such good stuff that I?m sure we?ll debate this forever,? Manager Joe Girardi said. ?But that?s what we think he can do.?
Cubs Farm Report: Jackson Finally Delivers Solid Outing
Cubs' prospect Jay Jackson had his first effective start of 2009 as he went seven innings while giving up just one earned run in a Double-A start.
Jackson struck out four, scattered four hits and three walks in the outing.
His ERA now stands at 6.64 for the season.

Hughes Returns With Six Shutout Innings
Phil Hughes fired six shutout innings to beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 11-0. He allowed two singles and two walks, striking out six and reclaiming, for the moment, his reputation.
?That was the old Phil Hughes that we need him to be,? said catcher Jose Molina, whose grand slam capped a 10-run seventh inning. ?If he keeps throwing that way, he?s going to be here for a long time.?
?There were points last year ? I?m not going to lie ? I was pretty lost,? he said. ?I felt like I had forgotten how to pitch. Things weren?t falling into place for me. I just tried to keep working as hard as I could.?
